Understanding Phonological and Phonemic Awareness and Why It Matters

The Big Picture: Phonological and Phonemic Awareness 

If you’ve sat through a literacy professional development session in the last few years, you’ve almost certainly heard the terms phonological awareness and phonemic awareness. But what do they mean exactly? How are they different? Why should every K–2 teacher understand them? 

These skills sit at the foundation of early reading development and are among the strongest predictors of future reading success. Understanding how they differ and how they work together can help teachers make more informed instructional decisions and better support young readers. 

Phonological awareness is the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate the sound structures of spoken language. The key word here is spoken. This skill is entirely auditory. There are no letters, print, or decoding involved. It is all about sounds. 

Phonological awareness is an umbrella term that covers a broad range of skills. Organized from simpler to more complex, these skills include: 

Phonological     Awareness

Word Awareness: The ability to count words in a sentence

Syllable Awareness: The ability to count syllables in a multisyllabic word

Rhyme: The ability to hear and produce rhyming words

Onset and Rime: The ability to segment CVC words into the first sound (onset) and the final sound pattern (rime) and blend these parts together to produce a new word

Phonemic Awareness

Segmenting: The ability to divide a word into its individual sounds

Blending: The ability to connect sounds to produce a new word

Sound manipulation: The ability to manipulate sounds in a word by, for example, removing a sound from a word, adding a sound to a word, or replacing a sound with another to make a new word

Word Awareness

A word is a single, distinct sound or combination of sounds that carries meaning and can be used independently. Students should recognize that a sentence is made up of separate words and be able to count the words in a sentence.

Syllable Awareness

A syllable is a unit of speech that is a single, unbroken sound. It contains at least one vowel and can form either a whole word or a segment of a word. Students should be able to clap the syllables in a word.

Rhyme

A rhyme occurs when words share the same ending sound pattern. Students begin by recognizing sounds at the end of words, such as the -at sound in cat, bat, and rat. Students should be able to hear rhymes, produce rhymes, and identify words that do not rhyme.

Onset and Rime

This refers to separating the beginning sound from the ending sound pattern in a word, such as c- and -at in the word cat. Students should be able to separate the first sound from the ending sound pattern.

Phonemic Awareness

Phonemic awareness is a subskill under the umbrella of phonological awareness and is the most advanced of these skills. When students have phonemic awareness, they can hear and manipulate individual sounds within words.

What Is the Difference Between Phonological and Phonemic Awareness?

A helpful way to think about the relationship between these skills is that phonemic awareness sits underneath the umbrella of phonological awareness. Consider a kindergarten student who can clap syllables in banana and identify words that rhyme but struggles to separate the individual sounds in ship. That student has developed some phonological awareness skills but may still need targeted phonemic awareness instruction. As students move from recognizing larger sound structures toward manipulating individual phonemes, they build the foundation necessary for later decoding and word reading success.

Zoom In: Phonemic Awareness

Phonemic awareness is the specific ability to hear and manipulate individual sounds, or phonemes, in a word.

A phoneme is the smallest unit of sound in a word. For instance, the word ship has three phonemes: /sh/, /i/, /p/.

A student with strong phonemic awareness can count sounds in a word, isolate these sounds, blend them together, and substitute one sound for another. For example, a teacher might ask a student what word is produced when they change the /sh/ in ship to /ch/, or when they change the /i/ in ship to /o/.

Phonemic awareness is a strong predictor of early reading success and is highly teachable.

Classroom Activities That Support Phonological and Phonemic Awareness

Teachers can use a variety of activities to help build strong phonological and phonemic awareness, particularly in primary classrooms. These activities include:

  • Asking students to clap the syllables in their name
  • Playing “I spy with something that rhymes with rake”
  • Having students stretch out and segment all the sounds in a word before they write them
  • Asking, “What is left if I take the /s/ off the word smile?”

Our 2025 review of the research suggests that phonemic awareness instruction focused on blending and segmenting sounds can benefit students. This instruction can be delivered in both whole-class and small-group settings, with small-group instruction providing additional support for multilingual learners and students with or at risk for reading difficulties and disabilities.

Instruction should use hand signals, finger tapping, stretching motions, and manipulatives with or without Elkonin boxes. Elkonin boxes support students by visually representing the number of sounds in a word. For example, a word like stop contains four phonemes and would therefore be represented by four connected boxes. Students can push manipulatives into each box as they identify the sounds.

Technology, including computer programs such as Earobics, can complement teacher-led instruction but should not replace it.

These results align with a broader body of reading research showing that explicit instruction in sound awareness contributes to stronger decoding and word recognition outcomes.

What Effective Instruction Looks Like

Providing explicit instruction in phonological and phonemic awareness is key to student success.

Instruction should focus on discrete skills and present no more than two specific skills, such as blending and segmenting, at one time. When introducing a new skill, teachers should begin by modeling the skill so students understand what successful performance looks like.

As students begin practicing, teachers should provide corrective feedback. This helps students recognize mistakes early and prevents the development of inaccurate habits or misunderstandings.

These activities do not need to take a significant amount of instructional time. Research suggests that less than 90 minutes per week, or approximately 20 minutes per day, can produce meaningful benefits for students.

If students have already begun learning sound patterns used for decoding and encoding, phonemic awareness can be integrated directly into those lessons. Students should hear a sound before they see it represented in print.

For example, a teacher might ask students what sound they hear at the end of the word car before introducing the ar r-controlled vowel pattern.

Our review suggests that instruction with the strongest impact on early reading outcomes is multicomponent. This means phonemic awareness is taught alongside other skills such as letter identification, phonics, vocabulary, and comprehension.

Why Phonological and Phonemic Awareness Matter for Reading Development

The science of reading has made one thing clear: many children do not naturally figure out how the sound system of a language works on their own. This is especially true for complex sound systems such as English.

If students are to learn these systems, they must be taught explicitly, and that phonological and phonemic awareness instruction should occur before or alongside phonics instruction. Students who struggle to hear the individual sounds within words often struggle to connect those sounds to letters.

Early readers who have not yet developed accurate and automatic word reading skills may particularly benefit from phonemic awareness instruction. It is not a readiness skill that teachers should wait for. It is a skill that can be taught, practiced, and strengthened.

When teachers intentionally develop phonological and phonemic awareness through explicit instruction and daily practice, they help create the foundation that later reading and spelling skills depend upon.
